LG V30 Review : The best audio smartphone yet !

LG V30 DESIGN AND BUILD

With a larger screen, the V30 is a bigger phone than the G6 but it doesn’t really feel like it. This is somewhat down to the fact LG has managed to make it thinner and lighter.
It’s just 7.4mm and 158g which is impressive for a 6in phone. It’s also 8mm shorter and 3mm narrower than its predecessor despite a bigger screen. It feels great in the hand with a very nice balance.

LG V30 screen

Overall, the V30 looks very much like the G6 in design with very little to differentiate the two. It uses a metal frame and a glass rear cover which is adorned with the dual camera module, power button and logos.
The LG V30 offers 4 GB of working memory and 64 GB of internal storage. In addition, there is supposed to be a V30+, which has 128 GB of storage. Both models can be expanded via an optional microSD card. The dual camera has been updated and now offers a larger aperture with f/1.6, which should still allow taking great pictures, especially in low light conditions. The resolution of the main camera has also been increased to 16 MP. In terms of the display, LG is now using the in-house OLED technology, providing the V30 with a FullVision panel in the 18:9-format (2:1). In addition to a fingerprint sensor, the V30 also offers facial and voice recognition to unlock the smartphone.

Although the V30 looks and feels great, the design does mean that it’s a slippery customer. This isn’t unusual for phones at the moment but can be an issue, especially if you don’t want to use a case.
LG keeps the IP68 rating so the V30 is fully waterproof and can be submersed in 1.5 meters of water for as long as 30 minutes without worry.
It also feels very strong and durable. This, according to LG, is down to the ‘H-Beam’ metal frame and Gorilla Glass 5 front. There’s also a heat pipe and cooling pad to help get rid of heat.
The screen might not have curved edges like its Samsung rivals but the glass does so it has a similar silky feel.
The V30 is available in four colours: Aurora Black, Cloud Silver, Moroccan Blue and Lavender Violet.

Software

The current Google Android 7.1.2 Nougat is used as the operating system of the LG V30, , which is loaded with the current security patches of Sept. 1, 2017 at the time of testing. The user interface is very similar to that of the LG G6, but additionally offers a floating bar. Unlike the LG V10 and V20, the V30 has no additional display for shortcuts and additional information. Therefore, the manufacturer has compensated for this via software. The floating bar can be moved around freely on the screen.
There will be an update to the most current Google Android 8.0 Oreo for sure, but we have not received an answer on the exact time frame. Possibly, it will still come this year.

Cameras

In terms of cameras, LG is using similar equipment as those in the LG G6. The front camera also has a meager resolution of 5 MP and is able to take selfies with 87° or 90° angles. Videos can be produced in Full HD.

The main camera is a dual solution. However, unlike the G model, both lenses do not have a 13-MP resolution, but the main lens has an additional 3 Megapixels. Moreover, the lenses are no longer made from plastic, but of glass, producing less distortion. The second camera is again a wide-angle lens (127°). Both cameras now have optical image stabilizers. However, the size of the image pixel of the sensor has shrunk by 1.0 μm, which does not benefit the low-light performance despite the larger aperture of f/1.6.

LG V30

LG also emphasizes the video function in the V30, which has been treated to some extras compared to the G6. With the Cine-Video filters you can add an atmospheric air to images, and with the point-zoom feature you can select an image area towards which you can softly zoom in and out. This already works quite well.

Performance

Inside the LG V30 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, which is currently the fastest SoC from the chip giant. This is accompanied by 4 GB of working memory and 64 GB of flash storage. The integrated Adreno 540 takes over the graphics computations.

Battery Life

Power Consumption

The battery of the LG V30 offers 3300 mAh, having the same size as that in the LG G6. Due to the OLED panel and the more efficient SoC, we expect a slightly better battery life despite the larger panel size.

Quick Charge 3.0 and wireless charging (Qi) are also supported. According to LG, it takes 110 minutes to fully charge the battery with the charger. The 50% mark is supposed to be reached after 36 minutes. Wireless charging takes slightly longer. In this case it will take 55 minutes for half a battery charge.
